Review of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) by John M — 09 Jul 2011
The one indelible scene of this movie that still leaves a mark in my mind are Steve Martin's scenes as "Ruprecht." "May I go to the bathroom first? Lawrence Jamieson: Of course you may.
Freddy Benson: [after a pause, and with relief] Thank you!" A guy pretending to be mentally challenged man-child willfully soiling himself at the dinner table is just plain messed up LOL. I also cannot look at corks in wine bottles without thinking of this movie.
"Don't take the cork off the fork" LMAO. As brilliant as Caine was in this film I am surprised he hasnt done more comedic roles, though he made his name as a straight-man. As Jim Carrey has learned the hard way, its incredibly easier for a straight actor to go comedy than for a comedic actor to go straight.
Bill Murray and Steve Carell the only other actors that I know of who have been able to pull that off successfully and they are just 2 actors out of thousands of actors who've ever taken the screen over the course of cinematic history.
Not much of a track record. Even Steve Martin himself hasn't been able do it and he is one of the most brilliant performers in the history of cinema and TV. One of the 50 greatest and hugely underrated comedies ever made.
Martin and Caine are great together. A fun movie to watch and some of the one liners are still funny almost a quarter century after its release. "Freddy Benson: [in a childlike voice] Oh, Lawrence! This is the happiest day of my life! I think my testicles are dropping!".
