Review of Dirty Pretty Things (2002) by Emilie K — 16 Nov 2007
Stephen Frears gets into the London underworld of immigrants like a seasoned veteran of the scene. Chewi Ejiofor plays a Nigerian asylum seeker and the delightfully cute Audrey Tatou plays a Turkish illegal immigrant struggling to come to terms with life in the shadows. As Ejifor says in the film ' we are the people you never see' , Frears shows how immigrants keep London going and the dangers they face from exploitation: sexual, emplyment and central to the plot, sales of kidneys.
A masterpiece of a film, Frears' casting and research was sublime. Will be regarded as classic cinema representing London in the future.
