Review of Dirty Harry (1971) by Shannon M — 23 May 2010
I like how the story was quite simple but still quite strong. To me, one of the main things that made it strong was the performance by the bad-guy because he was really creepy and weird (rather than just angry and B.A.) It made it seem more real. And the other great thing about this movie, which is also the best thing, is definitely Clint Eastwood. He brings a very satisfying element to the movie. Someone we can root for who will break the rules whenever necessary to do what should be done.
The movie doesn't have a whole lot of music and I'm not sure if that helps it or hurts it. If you're engrossed in the movie, it can help you feel like a part of the action. Or it can get you to lose your interest. I'll watch it again and determine which it is.
A lot of the filming was really good. I like far back shots that show you everything you need to see. But it was kind of ruined by the lack of lighting that often made it impossible to see. I don't mind dark shots as long as you can at least see an outline. This movie often had almost completely black scenes.
This movie had many strong suits and is definitely a very good movie.
