Review of Dirty Grandpa (2016) by John R — 18 May 2016
Dirty Grandpa is comedy film that is predictable, unfunny, and very dull with its direction. I feel like with this type of comedy film, it has been seen many times with other films when it uses the same meaning and message as it conveys to the audience. Except, lets add a raunchy grandpa played by Robert De Niro, who is obsessed with trying to get laid by a slutty college girl Lenore (Aubrey Plaza).
The story is so predictable, the audience by now should know which direction the characters are heading, and who is the person holding back another. Basically, the story follows Jason (Zac Efron) who is following his father (Dermot Mulroney) footsteps in working in the law firm. He is also engaged to Meredith (Julianne Hough), who is so obsessed and controlling to Jason, that he is not given much freedom to think for himself. Jasonâ(TM)s grandmother passes away, and his grandfather Dick (Robert De Niro) wants to travel to Florida. Jason and his grandfather go on that short trip to Florida, a week before his wedding. All while, his grandfather tries to party one last time, and trying to get laid. Dick and Jason both run into Lenore and Shadia (Zoey Deutch), who was once Jasonâ(TM)s classmate in his dream passion on being a photographer.
A redundant plot, Jason trying to fit in with his miserable life were his father and fiancà (C)e Meredith was controlling him. Until, his grandfather gets him to break away from his sheltered self into partying with girls, drugs, and loosening up on enjoying life. During all this, they both get a long and bond over the course of the trip, as Jason learns that he needs to take actions and have a life of his own. This has been seen before, when the sympathetic moment of Jason trying to chase the girl he always had a crush on, as they have a lot more in common than his fiancà (C)e.
It does have a lot of raunchy sexual humor, which really was not as funny. Looked like the cast performances did not have enough energy to make it laughable. Jasonâ(TM)s encounter with a pot head drug dealer that draws penises on their faces to them coming across dirty dead beat cops to seeing Lenore sexually flirting and having an obsession with the grandfather. Dirty Grandpa is a poorly done comedy film that lacked the energy, the cast seemed bored, and the direction is predictable and forgettable.
