Review of Dirty Grandpa (2016) by Junelkean — 05 Jul 2017
Hailed as the Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and sometimes The Godfather, Robert de Niro seems to be having a blast in an utterly raunchy and nasty comedy as the Dirty Grandpa. The story follows an engaged lawyer named Jason (Efron) who is framed up after driving his foul-mouthed grandfather (De Niro) back to Florida for Spring Break.
The screenwriter (John Philipps) appears to be having a lot of pleasure as he writes as many filthy statements and words for genitalia in this movie. It has a value of entertainment for quite some times, but after a while, it gets too desperate and irritating. The punchlines do not hit to the core and become overly offensive as it takes child molestation, sexism and racism, a joke.
Fundamentally, De Niro, Efron and Aubrey Plaza are the only stars to be found strong in terms of acting skills. Moreover, the unlikeable roles of Jason Mantzoukas and Adam Polly as a drug dealer and cousin, respectively, never works for their runtime in the movie.
VERDICT: The sex factor in Dirty Grandpa is truly vulgarity over victory.
