Review of Dirty Grandpa (2016) by Christopher R — 22 Jan 2016
There is really no need to go see this movie. You've seen it before, more or less. It's a cross between Bad Grandpa and Titanic. Only the sinking ship you're on is the theater you're watching this stinker in. On the plus side, it does take place mostly in Daytona Beach during spring break so there is plenty of flesh on display for all of us to enjoy. Especially a lot and I mean A LOT of naked Zac Efron. Unfortunately, you also get to see way too much of Robert DeNiro. Though for 72 years old he looks pretty good.
DeNiro is Dick Kelly and Efron is his grandson Jason Kelly. The Kelly clan takes a road trip from Atlanta to Boca Raton the day after Dick's wife's funeral so that Dick can get to their vacation home which is what she would want. DeNiro does a 180 from the somber grandfather into a man who curses like a sailor with the libido of an 18 year old. He shares lots of personal details about life with grandma, uses the f word a lot and even belts out the n word a couple of times in a respectful sort of way. (he asks the n-words if he can say the n-word first).
Its also the week before Jason is set to marry an overbearing blond bitch who is clearly not right for him. On the way to Boca a side trip to Daytona Beach ensues when Efron meets up with an old lab partner from UF. Grandpa does his worst and even throws a few gay slurs around which as offensive as they were at first comes full circle in the end with proper redemption. All the while, Efron has his eyes opened up from his dull life of being a corporate lawyer and the utterly predictable happens.
The jokes are lame and nothing really new comes out of this movie humor wise. The extras casting must have been cheap as the same people kept ending up in the background of different shots. Additionally, there is a drug dealing surf shop owner who is everywhere including in places he would never be but why not. Its sad that he is the comic relief when DeNiro and Efron had more potential if the script hadn't of been so sophomoric. Then the film tries to have a soft side its really kind of silly to be as vulgar and crass as possible and then try to have a serious moment. It's a mess. A hot mess full of hot occasionally naked young men with rippling bodies.
This Queen was bored. I laughed once. A generous 2 out of 5 rainbows.
1 rainbow - How did this get funded?
2 rainbows - You might find something of interest here but unlikely.
3 rainbows - Serves as a useful and entertaining enough distraction as a matinee.
4 rainbows - Stop reading this review and find a theater showing this film now!
5 rainbows - I'll need to find a spot for this in my Top 100 list. Absolutely flawless.
