Review of Dinner for Schmucks (2010) by Corey B — 15 Feb 2012
Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Jemaine Clement. With a cast such as this, one would think Dinner for Schmucks be hilarious from beginning to end. Unfortunately, I walked out of the theater disappointed.
There are parts where Dinner for Schmucks gets really funny, but I feel that there are too few of those scenes. The film sometimes tries too hard to be humorous, and in most situations does not end up funny.
We have seen each of the actors listed above in hilarious movies or TV shows before (The Office, 40 Year Old Virgin, The Hangover, Flight of the Conchords), so we know they are great comic actors. I can only come to the conclusion that the script did not live up to the level of comedy the cast and crew were trying to achieve.
Dinner for Schmucks just does not live up to its full potential, but is still entertaining for a watch. In an era where regular movie tickets are at least ten dollars and fifty cents, people have to pick and choose which films are worth watching.
Dinner for Schmucks is not one of them (with the cast and director, there's no reason it shouldn't be worth it).
