Review of Dinner for Schmucks (2010) by Ricky J — 21 Jul 2011
Dinner for Schmucks is a remake of French film Le Dîner de Cons. Timothy Conrad (Paul Rudd) is a business man looking for a promotion. His boss tells him that hr holds a dinner were everyone brings a freak to the dinner and they laugh at these ridiculous characters. At first Timothy feels this is morally the wrong thing to do but, he does it any way when he finds Barry Speck (Steve Carrall). Barry is perfect for the show because he has a very strange hobby, he collects dead mice and dresses them up as famous people and dioramas. Barry also gets Timothy in trouble in various different ways.
Paul Rudd plays the straight man while Steve Carrell steals the show. Paul Rudd is a perfect lead as the average joe while every other character is anything but, average. Along with Carrell is a crazy painter named Kieran Vollard (Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords), a wannabe physic played by Zach Galifianakis and a bunch of other supporting actors who are as crazy as they are funny. It's Carrell and other supporting actors that really make the movie funny.
I've heard this isn't as good as the original French movie but, I wouldn't know because I've never seen it. Dinner for Schmucks reception by critics hasn't been good but, this is a solid comedy movie in my opinion.
