Review of Dinner for Schmucks (2010) by Christal J — 11 Apr 2012
Dinner for Schmucks is a typical kind of movie, but it's not what you expect. It has the meanest premise imaginable, but is never dark and never less than heartfelt. Steve Carell gets the laughs and he makes the movie work when it gets serious, and this is one of the only times the mid comedy crisis has actually helped the movie instead of hurt it, but it's also cheap.
I usually give an enormous amount of credit to Carell for playing characters, and making those characters funny. In this, he's nothing more than Jim Carrey. He makes sounds, acts stupid, and has some mindless fun.
So I'd recommend this movie for a matinee or bargain movie night or dvd. It's funny, and it's a good time, but I wish the writing had matched the talent of the cast.
