Review of Diner (1982) by Ben F — 20 Aug 2012
"Diner" ranks among some of the great ensemble cast films of our time. Barry Levinson accomplishes everything he sets out to do in this production. With a great story, and some wonderful acting by everyone, the audience is able to enjoy themselves through scenes of laughter, despair, and especially friendship. "Diner" has it all.
There's this special diner. It's a special place to a specific group of men who have been going their for the longest time. It's their home base. The diner reflects their everlasting friendship, and how no matter what happens, they'll always be able to go back to the diner and reflect on their life experiences. Tim Daly, Steve Guttenberg, Daneil Stern, Mickey Rourke, and Kevin Bacon all star in this film. Their friendship is something that feels extremely vivacious and real, thanks to the well done story and script. Over the course of the film, the men feel that they are drifting apart in different ways. The movie doesn't just provide us with all the common senses of joy and sadness, but it structures a commentary on the life experience in general.
Like I said earlier, the acting is solid by everyone. Mickey Rourke and Kevin Bacon are a couple of key performers in this movie because they both do an excellent job. The rest of the cast as well was spot on. When you've got great acting, its always a plus. And this film certainly had that.
"Diner"does take place during a different time, but its message resonantes throughout history. The symbolism of friendship and courage are relevant to all generations, and this film is able to dictate that mesage to anyone from any time. You don't really get a lot of films like this. I know I'm kind of speaking a little weirdly in this specific review. So let me just say this. "Diner" was highly enjoyable. It had a great script, a heartfelt story, good acting, and a good soundtrack. It's definitely a movie to see. I am certain of that.
