Review of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) by Minal M — 25 Oct 2007
This is my favorite Bollywood film. Long before we had had our fill of the high gloss, sticky sweet, unreal world of Yash Chopra, we were mesmorized by DDLJ. This was the film that made Shah Rukh and Kajol famous.
An interesting and basically conservative negotiation of love marriage and arranged marriage set in Europe and Punjab, and an interesting window into the way Indians perceive NRI's. Produced during both economic liberalization and Hindutva, DDLJ gives us a sense of the competing desires of 1990s India.
