Review of Dig (2014) by Lora N — 29 Jul 2009
So I went into this film not having been a huge fan of either band though slightly more familiar with the music of the Dandy Warhols than BJM. But with a deep love of music and those that make it, I was excited about the opportunity to take a closer look at both groups.
And what a look it was...
The entire thing was a bit of a train wreck. The film focused on Anton Newcombe of BJM but was narrated by Courtney Taylor of the Dandy Warhols and examined how their musical paths diverged during struggles with mental illness, drug abuse, and record execs.
It provided an interesting peek at the bizarre nature of music as an industry, the conflicts of artists as they wrestle with the notion of "success" and how the little bumps in the rode can sometimes turn into huge stumbling blocks.
Watching the rise of these two bands, side by side, was like reading a "Choose Your Own Adventure." It was striking to watch the BJM head toward a dead end at every turn while the Dandy Warhols somehow managed to escape disaster, sometimes by sheer luck.
What was very clear in the film was that it wasn't all about talent...
