Review of Dig! (2004) by Michael L — 02 Sep 2008
Pretty interesting documentary that gives you an inside look at the at the often petty and sometimes pretentious world of indie rock (specifically in Portland,OR- I think).
What was most memorable about it to me was that the filmakers tried to present the Brian Jonestown Massacre and its psychotic frontman as the musical geniuses that nobody could understand and appreciate, while presenting the more successful Dandy Warhols as less talented and somewhat of musical sell-outs.
Hearing the music in the film, and seeing the performance footage this was clearly not true. Besides having a psycho of a singer/songwriter who might start a fight at any gig, the Jonestown massacre really offered nothing musically: no melody or rhythym. Basically, they sucked... and that's why they weren't successful - not because they were "underappreciated" or "troubled".
The Dandy Warhols were just a better band, with a funner, more melodic and harmonious sound. Plus, they seemed like better people to boot: more fun-loving and less pretentious. That's why their band sold records and became more successful... not because they "sold out".
It was typical hipster mythmaking by the filmakers. The band you haven't heard of but they have is way better, man.
Still an interesting slice-of-life documentary though.
