Review of Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995) by Robert R — 18 Oct 2017
Having seen Die Hards 1, 4, and now 3, With a Vengeance is easily my favorite. Its structure is pretty clever, the banter is constant, and the set pieces are cool. All of the main characters could be described as "kind of annoying" - including McClane himself - because they have the unfortunate tic of cracking jokes immediately after hearing that hundreds of children's lives are on the line.
So it's insensitive for sure, and I'm not sure what they were going for by casting the black man as the racist, but Samuel L Jackson is in peak form so it can be...mostly forgiven. I take issue with Jeremy Irons' over the top performance (magnified when he and his goons put on 'flawless' American accents - like really, did he only hire thugs who went to Julliard?) but it kinda fits the film, I guess.
He's just never terribly intimidating. Either way, a very fun watch, with a lot better one liners than the original.
