Review of Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995) by Zack S — 30 Sep 2010
Definitely the best sequel among the "Die Hard" franchise. Of course the original is a classic and one of the more prominent and influential entries into the action genre, and it was nice to see director John McTiernan come back to do the third film and bring the spirit of the first film back in several ways.
The film shows John McClane even more washed up than he was in the first two films, but it works here as his appeal was always in the fact that he was the quintessential wiseass reluctant hero. This is a good film, but McClane is one of those characters who is thoroughly engaging even in a weaker picture.
In this effort Samuel L. Jackson plays a perfect foil to McClane as well as a racially obsessed civilian who has about as much bravado as McClane. And Jeremy Irons can't hold a candle to Alan Rickman in the villain department, but he's still pretty strong in this.
The action scenes are really fun and full of lots of pyrotechnics, but the dialogue and interactions are also hilarious in between, leaving very little lag time. A solid action flick in a fabled action franchise.
