Review of Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995) by Bradley G — 12 Aug 2015
After the relative disappointment in Die Hard 2, I wondered if it was even possible to create a good sequel in the franchise, but Die Hard With a Vengeance managed to do a pretty good job of it. This time we have McClane sucked into the villain's plan as part of the villain's plan which is a neat shift in the script for these films.
It adds a new element to the movie and gives a plausible reason for him to be there aside from coincidence. The addition of Samuel L. Jackson is also delightful because it gives Bruce Willis someone to argue with throughout the film.
Jeremy Irons is a great follow-up to the amazing Alan Rickman, and I love his few scenes with Bruce Willis because they play off each other nicely. The villain's plot is much more intricate this time, but I love puzzling through it and trying to understand what was intended.
It's nice to see John McClane on his home turf because we no longer have to watch him struggle for support from the other law enforcement, and it adds some emotional impact when some of the cops start to die.
The biggest flaw in Die Hard With a Vengeance is that it still clings to some of the highly illogical action that was seen in the first sequel. There are several things that happen to McClane and Zeus that would kill an actual human being, but these guys are indestructible.
Despite the super hero nature of the characters in the film, this is still the best sequel they've made in the Die Hard series and I'd gladly watch it again any day.
