Review of Die Hard 2 (1990) by Allen G — 31 Mar 2016
Of course it doesn't match the original- what could? But this is still a good movie and it's still a Die Hard movie- it tries it's best to keep the charm and confidence found in the original while expanding into more standard action-movie territory with a stupidly clichéd bad guy to match.
What makes this successful as a sequel is its attempt to branch out- it's not a copy of the original and it doesn't depend on constant nods to the original either. It chooses to fit it's genre more- the original was a surprise hit but this one had high expectations and so it treated itself as a mainstream movie and I think it had to do this to make a splash. The downside is that this approach may make the movie more commercially successful but it also makes it more typical of the genre and a less-impressive offering.
The plot it pretty ridiculous which is in the Die Hard tradition really but this is a well-written movie and it's all forgivable plus it's still pretty tame compared to modern action movies now.
Out of the trilogy (lets not talk about the rest) this one is my least-favourite simply because the clichés just hurt the film too much- the bad guy doesn't impress me and the plot is a strange mix of action-packed and bland. It's far from a failure but it could have been so much more.
