Review of Die Another Day (2002) by Travis H — 24 Jan 2010
My least favorite of Brosnan's Bond films. I'll start on a positive note saying that Halle Berry is incredible as Jinx (even if the character is kind of poorly written...) and so is Rosamund Pike as the incredible Miranda Frost. Another great thing about this Bond film is the 'fencing' sequence between Bond and Gustav Graves. No matter how 'unbelievable' it is, it's a great fight sequence.
Now for the negatives... the plot is just awful. The beginning is just plain unnecessary and the writers did a bad job at trying to make this a (yet another) revenge story as well as a 'world domination' (even though it's just North Korea) Bond film. Also the fact that a Korean (or even just an Englishman) would be able to send up a satellite into space that he can control from a suit etc. is ridiculous. As well as the 'face changing...' come on United Artists... it's a LITTLE much, actually it's way too much.
The action sequences are great (besides the god-awful laser cutting fight and the "Bond-turned-MacGuyver" windsurfing-on-a-rocket-car-hood-with-a-parachute-and-strings was just plain dumb) and some acting was good, but that's about it.
I like the little homages to previous Bond films and the return of the Aston Martin, but turning invisible? Um... no. Thankfully they learned their lesson and the next film "Casino Royale" was just perfection.
