Review of Did You Hear About the Morgans? (2009) by Amanda H — 26 Jun 2010
I have very unexpectedly discovered that I am a rom-com fan. The genre is innane, always predictable and very often displays poor role models for women. Yet the ones that look like American or British sit-coms, always win me over.
As with all this year's rom-com 'hits', they deliver exactly what they say they will, and that ain't bad. It's horses for courses. Why would you watch one of these if rom-coms aren't your cup of tea? You either like them or you don't. To say one is better than another, very rarely makes sense.
Hugh and SJP are an odd choice with 0.1% screen chemistry, but they just about make it - probably because of the help gained from a couple of good old stage hands in Steenburgen and Elliot.
This is the second film I have seen with Kim Shaw after 'She's Out of my League', and she again steals her scenes when they give her little or nothing. Like Pare in 'Hot Tub Time Machine', she's another actress who is too often wasted.
