Review of Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003) by Zack S — 17 Dec 2009
I had avoided this for so long after it was panned but I'm really glad I saw this now. It's a great comedy. I'm a fan of David Spade. His sense of humour appeals to me and in this movie his sarcastic wit made me laugh a lot. Witness his wicked putdown to 3 school bullies which is hilarious to see. The plot as it is concerns Dickie Roberts, a former child star desperate to make a comeback. To research for an audition for a Rob Reiner movie he moves in with a family (mother, father and 2 kids) for a month in order to understand what it feels like to be a child. Something he missed out on as he was such a huge star when he was growing up.
It's got a great storyline and the cast is great especially the 2 kids but it's David Spade that really makes this movie. Loads of former Hollywood child stars make cameos in this movie and the song featuring them during the end credits is very funny. Forget about the bad press this movie got and give it a go. I think you'll find it's not as bad as they said it was. Sure, it's not perfect but you will get some good laughs out of it. Oh and don't forget his catchphrase "this is nucking futs"!!!
