Review of Dick Tracy (1990) by Jordan B — 31 Jan 2009

I've wanted to see this movie for more than ten years, and I finally got to. It wasn't exactly what I expected, but for what it is I love it. Whatever you do, DON'T take it seriously! If you do, you will turn it off as soon as Littleface comes onscreen.

A part of me would like to see this done more reallsitically, but another part of me thinks that this is just the way the film should be. My initial reaction (I tried to take it seriously) was that there was such a thing as being TOO faithful to the source material.

After all, the reason Dick Tracy's coat was yellow wasn't because it was meant to be yellow, it was that that was as close as they could get to tan and look good in the Sunday comics. But whatever.

Taking their decision to stay with the comic roots, everything was amazing. All the villains looked almost exactly like they did in the comics. And I'm really surprised that so many big-name actors signed on for this--Al Pacino, Madonna, Dustin Hoffman, Dick Van Dyke.

..half of them couldn't even be recognized because of the makeup! A good movie, as long as you know what you're letting yourself in for.
