Review of Dick Tracy (1990) by Dave H — 21 Mar 2010
Eye-popping primary-colour art direction, awesome baddie make-up, some foot tapping Sondheim songs, brilliant supporting casting, some snappy screwball dialogue, Madonna basically dry-humping the lead actor in skin tight dresses .
...these things are more fun for adults than kids, but even for adults STILL they don't a great movie make. Beatty's technical direction is great, but once again his huge ego gets in the way: casting (and soft-filtering) himself as the square jawed hero only works to a point - there's hardly any charm or charisma in his cross-eyed blankness, and very little psychological resonance to the tale.
Still, Pacino is awesome, Hoffman fun, Korsmo cool, and in a shallow way, this is a nice curiosity piece.
