Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Megan W — 29 Mar 2009
Dreadful. Utterly and inexplicably so.
This was my first Romero movie, and I have to admit that after this one I've slid down ALL his other movies on my "to watch" list down down down. I now intend to see the Disney sequel to "Cinderella" before I see anything else this man has made (psst... that's *really* far down).
It struggled the most with characters I thought. Secondly, it struggled with the whole CONCEPT of p.o.v. shooting... it's attempt to acknowledge the character's motivations were sort of awkward and stupid. Thirdly, it struggled with plot, dialogue, and action shots all equally.
The only thing it didn't struggle with was making overly poetic statements which may have a place if (unfortunately) they weren't commentary on a situation I really couldn't have cared less about. When you like NO ONE in the movie, and NO ONE makes any smart decisions and NO ONE acts like they really want to live... well then I don't much feel like watching them struggle through their lives.
The best part of the movie was the last 30 seconds, but even then I'm unsure if I really liked the idea he threw out there or if I just THOUGHT I did because my brain released a whole flood of dopamine at the sheer fact it realized the movie was over.
Dreadful.
