Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Andrew C — 15 Apr 2009
Irrespective of the quality of the script and acting, this is a film that simply doesn't work. Romero wants to film a verite movie, yet he also wants to have a musical soundtrack, and to change viewpoints, and edit as he sees fit, and most of the film is spent explaining how these incongruent aspects are in what is supposed to be a hand-held camera experience.
The scenes where someone is in a life-or-death struggle with a zombie, and not one but, at times, two of her supposed friends stand idly by filming the moment simply beggar belief.
There's some half-hearted mentions of media manipulation and user-generated content, and an admittedly hilarious turn from a deaf Amish man, but mostly it's a young man's film made by an old man. A sad addition to an ailing series.
