Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Michael H — 11 Mar 2010
Thoughout this movie, there's mainly 2 questions you ask yourself.
1. Why is this guy still filming? Seriously, he even says it himself He doesn't care if he dies, he just wants to make a movie. The main character/cameraman is a fucking idiot!
2. What happened to Romero?
This movie would've been greatly improved if it weren't confused about what kind of film it is. I went into this movie expecting another "I want to document everything that happens" kinda movie that's become popular over the past few years (Blair Witch, [REC], Cloverfield etc.).
But for some reason, I was bombarded with "downloaded footage", a musical score and some arty montages and a voiceover every 20 minutes. I also don't understand how the cameraman manages to walk within a metre of a zombie and yet, the zombie still insists on chasing someone the other side of the room. As I already said, the main character is a moron. Everyone else managed to fit nicely into the whole apocalypse. Zombies show up, killing everyone "Oh, that guy's dead, shoot him in the head" BANG! Wow, that was easy. It took one guy 4 people before he even looked a bit confused as to what's going on. The visual effects were pretty poor, I know they didn't need great stuff because it was all on these little cameras. But when you get a close-up and a zombie is pull bright red chunks of cg out of someones neck, it's got to look like they actually tried.
Overall, a very dissapointing entry from the Zombie maestro Romero (and that's coming from a guy who liked Land of the Dead).
