Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Jim M — 30 Mar 2011
Taking place concurently with Night of the Living Dead, Diary of the Dead tells of a group of film students who document the rise of the Dead and the subsequent chaos that insues well seeking refugee...
Worthy addition to the Dead series (Night, Dawn, Day, Land). Romero doesn't try to reinvent the wheel here instead sticking to the rules he invented back in the late 60's. Thus we're able to jump in pretty quickly without alot of exposition. Minimal character development but because the film is POV documentary style (think Blair Witch) this makes sense, everyone knows one another and the events take place over the space of only a couple days, they're all running on adrenaline and the survival instenct. Good effects, not for the weak of stomach. Shorter then some of the other Dead films (Dawn I'm looking at you) forcing him to keep the social commentary in the backround (media oversaturation, no more main stream media) so you don't feel like he's beating you over the head with it (Dawn). Worth a watch if your a zombie or horror fan.
Final note: Whats with all this bullshit "Are we worth saving?/Any different from the Zombies" that keeps popping up in all these movies. The answer to both is Yes, yes we are...now move the fuck on would you? Starting to sound like a broken record.
