Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Jason H — 21 Oct 2011
"We're going to Scranton...we need fuel." = My favorite line in this movie. Romero's zombie movies bring a social commentary lacking in just about every other take on the living dead.
The fact is...the zombies arent what is scary, we are. How many times can you make a movie with the same premise? Well at least 5. While the zombies are a constant the world we live in evolves. This is the you tube/myspace generation response to these events.
In all it worked well, however the charm that low budget independent filmaking brought to Night of the Living Dead is more of a downside this time around. With a little more to work with as he had in Land of the Dead, we may have had a real classic.
The Cloverfieldian concept works ok...but not as well as in that film as the cast isnt as good and alot of the film rides on them. Time will tell how the social commentary hold up, but for now it is a rather good, even if the weakest, entry in the "of the Dead" series.
