Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Scott C — 16 Feb 2013
As a Romero fan going all the way back, I really wanted to love this movie. The premise was there for the taking. Unfortunately, the finished product is one step above garbage. To say that the acting is poor is being kind.
NOTHING feels natural in this movie. The hand-held experience is wasted in every conceivable way. The heavy-handed (and totally out-of-place) narration consistently takes us out of "the moment" and is often unintentionally funny in it's faux-somber tone.
It's relied upon too heavily to set a scene and riddle us with social context. We get it, George! But hey, it also allows our dull narrator to explain why the entire film has a loud musical score.
..another insult on our intelligence. If you want to see a stellar hand-held "reality horror" movie, see [REC]. And no, not the horrid American remake called "Quarantine".
