Review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010) by Justin M — 21 Mar 2011
I propose the hypothesis that director Thor Freudenthal was never between the ages of 11-15, and he just basically warped from age 10 to 16, because this movie is absolute shit.
It's not even funny for a kid's movie. The annoying protagonist fails to live up to the relatability of the novel's main character. It doesn't feel like I'm watching the goofy, off-beat-but lovable greg heffley, but instead I'm listening to some stupid kid pretending to be Greg.
Wimpy Kid's main flaw is that is advertises it's source material too much. I understand it's based on the book, but do I need to see cartoons and inner monologues every ten seconds? I'm not getting a different experience here, I might as well be reading the book again.
Wimpy gets one wimpy star. It's sequel may show improvement, but looking at the commercials constantly showing Rowley singing along to the worst audibal-cheese-grater-simulator over and over again- I don't see it.
