Review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010) by Tom R — 18 Jul 2011
It should really be called Diary of a Narcissist, because the Wimpy Kid in the movie makes himself impossible to like. Other than that, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is pretty good. It has some genuinely funny parts, it's more well directed than the majority of for-preteen movies, and it's an almost satirical look into the worst part about growing up: junior high.
It seems like the movie is a line of sketches rather than an actual plot, but it's for the kids and it works. It is also predictable because on many occasions, you know the payoff of a joke way before it happens (for example, *minor spoiler* the wimpy kid wants to be the new cartoonist of the school newspaper and his best friend wants to help him out.
.. guess who gets the job?). What really brings down the movie is the main character. He would be more likable if he would not be a jerk, thinking only of his own popularity and just realize how unimportant it is (*another minor spoiler* another character at the end of the movie realizes this.
.. clearly the movie should have centered around him/her). But Diary of a Wimpy Kid isn't as deep as I'm making it out to be. At least it's an engaging enough film for most ages.
