Review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010) by Chris M — 22 Apr 2012
My daughter loves the books, and they are quite light and fun. There were several very funny scenes in this film, and it's evidently trying to be Malcolm in The Middle. But frankly, it fails.
The titular Wimpy Kid is actually a pretty nasty piece of work. He's mean, cruel and spiteful. They try to explain this away through his approaching puberty / new-school social order, but ultimately it doesn't work for me. He doesn't seem to have anything like an epiphany, he just gets taken back by the friend he rejected.
MITM featured great family solidarity in amidst the chaos, and Malcolm seemed very much more aware of the feelings of others than The Wimpy Kid. It was also much, much funnier, had more heart and more edge than this.
