Review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010) by Seth S — 02 Aug 2011
Ran across "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" last night on TV; oddly, I was getting ready to turn off the TV and head to bed when the opening scene caught my attention and I found myself genuinely laughing. I decided to DVR it and then got caught up on it this morning before work.
Fortunately, my middle school experience was much better than this, but I found myself nonetheless relating to the main character -- and more so to his older brother, having been the older brother to always prank my younger sister (including pouring a pitcher of ice cold water on her to get her out of bed!).
At some point in grade school, we've all been where the main character is throughout the movie: that awkward stage where we are trying to find our way in a sea of people without getting swallowed alive. All familiar territory is addressed: friendship, adversity, lying, bullies, growing up, awkward social situations, and -- yes, even meeting girls.
If you want a lighthearted comedy, I would recommend "Diary of Wimpy Kid". I found myself laughing more than I have at a recent movie. And it's a clean, decent movie -- family-friendly from what I saw.
Four Stars just because I liked it so much! (More than I have most movies at the theatre this year!) =-).
