Review of Diary of a Tired Black Man (2009) by Jennifer P — 15 Jun 2009
This Black Man is a handsome architect, provides a home for his family, cooks meals, takes care of his kid, doesn't even flirt with the hot woman in red who offers him a drink but his wife bitches and nags him to death. This isn't a man but a cliche and when he gets tired, he wants a divorce. So what if he now dates a white woman, that's his business.
This isn't really a movie but a commentary on how African American men and women view intra-black relationships, aggressive black women, and interracial coupling. How you respond depends on your culture but it's entertaining. There are three accents that I love to listen to: a native St. Lucian telling a joke in creole, Southerners talking about politics or justice, and African Americans expressing anger. This movie offers a lot of street-wise humor from African Americans in beauty salons, bars, and literallly standing on street corners. It's clever that they're shown clips of the actual movie, or other opinions, and asked to comment.
The central story focuses on Jimmy Jean-Louis (very charming) as James and Paula Lema as his wife Tanya. However, the best scenes are the commenters which turns the movie into a documentary. I didn't see "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman" which was written by Tyler Perry so I don't know if this movie is meant as a spoof or if it succeeds. However, I found it funny and it made me smile alot. Also, I wouldn't dare to differ with any of the opinions of the commenters.
