"Diary of a Suicide" is a mildly intriguing allegory that starts with a series of conversations between a tour guide(Sami Frey) and translator(Delphine Seyrig) on board a cruise ship in the Mediterranean.
He is smitten with her and wants to see her eyes, but she refuses to take off her eyeglasses, ever. While "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" was not as pretentious, it did take the humorous route when it came to tinted eyewear with a very funny joke.
In contrast, "Diary of a Suicide" takes it in two symbolic directions. First, it is concerned with the traveler who gets a brief glimpse of the world on vacation but forgets everything by the time he gets home.
The other is the person who only wants to see the world through rose colored glasses. Both want to have nothing with suffering and hardship, and wish to avert their eyes. The tour guide might seem to be no different as he goes to a play on shore but that leads to a different level of reality.
The play is about people who are willing to do something to change the world, even if it is terrorism. In the end, how far is the filmmaker urging us to go?
