The first 45 minutes could be seen as some of the worst scenes of any biopic ever made.

Then it becomes a sub-par TV movie.

The film's cinematography may be good, but as a whole the film doesn't work. Everything is forced. The romance is wooden. And Watts' English accent is odd.

The film acts as if it's Stephen Frears' The Queen, building up suspense to the reveal of Naomi Watts as Diana, but she doesn't look like Diana. Yet it wouldn't make a difference as the way she is directed, mixed with the poor script results in a weirdly off performance for the central character.

There are nice moments, especially nearer the end, as the press becomes too much.

Apart from that this film feels to safe. I didn't feel like I found out anything new. It just needed some kind of edge. Maybe it did need to offend somebody.
