Review of Diamonds Are Forever (1971) by Alec B — 23 Jul 2010
The first truly campy Bond. Camp can work if its done right, and I just don't think the goofy atmosphere was a good mesh with Sean Connery's performance. The bond films were always over the top, but they were exciting, this movie isn't and I never feel that the characters are ever in any real danger.
Making Blofeld funny was a terrible idea, I'll admit that You Only Live Twice has its silly moments, but at least the Donald Pleasence Blofeld was creepy, bald, disfigured, and dangerous. The Charles Gray Blofeld in this movie is a wacky homosexual with hair.
Oh and I've recently discovered the Mr. Kidd and Mr. Wint (also homsexuals for some reason; this movie is just really homophobic) are really terrible henchmen. Oddjob and Jaws were ridiculous henchmen to be sure, but at least they proved to be worthy opponents for Bond.
