Review of Diamonds Are Forever (1971) by Daniel G — 01 May 2013
It's bad enough that I don't know what is going on here. But I don't even care. And why should? Sean Connery clearly doesn't. If I thought he phoned it in for You Only Live Twice, then he didn't bother to pick up the receiver for Diamonds Are Forever.
Look...I don't care about these diamonds. I get that they serve a higher purpose later on, but is it necessary to to spend THIS much time tracking them? Bond was right-why is any of this MI6's affair? None of the Bond girls are likeable, and the villain is nonredeemable (can we stop with the Blofeld already?).
The Vegas car chase was on the verge of being quite good; it just needed a certain something something to bring it all together. I enjoyed the characters of Mr. Kidd and Mr. Wint, even though Putter Smith couldn't act himself out of an open field.
Shirley Bassey returns with the theme song, which is lyrically and musically clever, but doesn't have the raw power of Goldfinger. In the end, this movie was confusing and ridiculous.
