Review of Diamonds Are Forever (1971) by Dean M — 10 May 2012
It's an all American return for Connery but maybe he should have stayed away. The first time I saw Diamonds I liked it a lot as it is completely different to what has come before, but now it seems a bit ridiculous.
It's all very camp which reflects the entertainment scene in Britain at the time of release. It almost feels like a Carry On movie in parts which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just doesn't seem very Bond.
Connery is obviously tired of the role and pretty much goes through the motions. Jill St.John plays Tiffany Case, a bad girl who comes good and seems to lose all sense of self along the way. Or was she a bimbo to start with?
The action scenes are mostly forgettable with the only real standout being the elevator brawl with Peter Franks which is reminiscent of the train fight in From Russia with Love.
The car chase in Vegas is a must see, not for the obvious stunt show type approach, but the hordes of people on the sidewalk watching. I've never seen such blatant movie making with no regard to the crowds it inevitably draws.
And don't get me started on the 'wrong pussy' scene!!
Perhaps I could score this higher as there is some entertainment there but when compared to the movies before and after it really is a low point. Bring on Roger Moore.
