Review of Dial M for Murder (1981) by Benjamin N — 02 Aug 2011
The master is coasting, but not like he was in "To Catch a Thief", which was charming but lazily plotted. Here the story is intricately set up, and the characters are developed well. It just seems a little low stakes, never rising to the terrific heights of suspense Hitchcock is capable of.
Yet that's part of its charm. Not every movie ends with the villain, unmasked in front of the heroes and an officer of the law, genially offfering to mix them some drinks. Oh, uh, spoiler, y'all.
