Review of Dial M for Murder (1981) by Sausages M — 16 Dec 2012
As usual, Hitchcock nails it. The tension builds and builds and builds and then he puts you on the edge of your seat and keeps you there until the climax. Grace Kelly is surprisingly effective as an English lady and Ray Milland chilling as her secret nightmare of a husband. John Williams sparkles as the Chief Inspector despite it being a fairly cartoonish performance by modern standards- but you just feel like the police were probably like that in the 50s anyway. Robert Cummings does his job.
Whilst the thing is blatantly a filmed play, it works really well in the cinematic format. This simplicity is key. Just a stunning little thriller, really.
