Review of Dial M for Murder (1981) by Mike C — 25 May 2014
Yet another Hitchcock movie that proves to be timeless. At 56 years old, it's still quite watchable and entertaining. My problem with this movie, and probably many of Hitchcocks and/or the mystery genre, is the way everything conveniently falls into place. Hitchcock's art is that he can make it seem somewhat real and entertaining. A lower artist would just have everything come out. This is a pretty clever bit of plot, but with some much between the lines thinking, it had to be well-acted and directed to be even half believable. Grace Kelly naturally stands out. What a beaut.
A couple funny things: rotary telephones, and in 1954, evidently the French had not taught Americans how to kiss. All kissing is on the lips and held. What a terrific bore that must have been!
