Review of Dhobi Ghat (2010) by Neeti M — 27 Jan 2011
Mumbai : Where dreams are made, shattered, fulfilled, a city with life, heartbreak, sorrow and survival..A beautifully shot movie, which shows the heart and soul of Mumbai and its inhabitants, the charm of old Mumbai, its people and places, their dreams and heartache, pain and hopes.
Of course ,this isn't a movie for the Bollywood-brainwashed masses. And just because it has Aamir Khan in it, don't expect it to be another stereotype Bollywood movies complete with unrealistic action sequences, far-fetched (but cliche) stereotype storylines, song and dance routines and item numbers. This is a a far more subtle look into the lives of four people in the city, and their connections.
The cinematography is wonderful, evoking a sense of Mumbai that even Danny Boyle could only try to capture in Slumdog Millionaire. It is the story of the common folk, their simple dramas and lives. Beautiful performances by Prateik Babbar and Monica Dogra, with a very controlled, but slightly lacking performance by Aamir Khan. The haunting background score by the fantastic Gustavo Santaolalla is perfect for the movie sequences.
Again, it's not a movie for those expecting a strong storyline or for those with a short attention span looking for a glamorous Bollywood movie. Watch it if you want a mature indie movie.
