Review of Dhobi Ghat (2010) by Kaustubh H — 28 Jan 2011
Artsy, innovative and superbly directed Dhobi Ghat is a vivid depiction of Mumbai. It will succeed as an art film but it does not really drive home the point it is trying to make. With people whose lives criss cross unintentionally in the background of a crowded suburb of the city it does not make for a very rich narrative. However it is still engaging because of the amazing direction and top notch performances by its actors most notably the character of Yasmine and that of Prateik Babbar. Aamir Khan delivers a restrained yet powerful performance.
It is a short film yet it tends to drawl at some points. There is something definitely good about the film. It feels like a layered canvas yet it leaves behind much more to be asked for.
What it essentially conveys is the life in a city like Mumbai. Where inspite of dreaming big one is still stuck where society forces him to, where the world is not bothered in your sufferings and where the city absorbs all your emotions like a sponge. It is not so different in any metropolitan city and that's where, inspite of bringing forth a colourful film it lacks novelty.
Still, it is definitely worth a watch and especially for those who are art admirers and admirers of good direction. 3 on 5.
