Review of Dhobi Ghat (2010) by Akash S — 04 Feb 2011
Great effort by Debutant Director, Kiran Rao.
Simple stories surrounding the lives of people who come to Mumbai, with their hopes & their dreams... Very rarely do you see real characters in hindi cinema and this had some. The main thing I liked about the movie is that it didn't have the usual artificial happy ending. It showed life the way it is. And I think that's what Kiran wanted to achieve; showing things the way they are, and without too much drama.
The story of the newly-married muslim girl in the video diary was quite moving. The painting by Aamir Khan's character really captures the essence of the girl. It shows how much a painting can mean when you know what's the story or inspiration behind it.
One thing is for sure - the movie won't be liked by everyone. It is for those who can appreciate real and artistic movies.
Final words - not a great movie, but a great effort. Different from the usual bollywood masala.
