Review of Devil's Knot (2013) by Danny O — 29 Apr 2014
As someone who has been involved with this case from the inside, I was very refreshed to see an objective accounting of the events on May 1993. This film does not speculate or manipulate the case, it solely reveals the humanity of the people involved.
This movie does not attempt to cram 20 years of history into 2 hours, instead, it introduces the viewer to the people affected; this allows the audience to learn more about them than the simple caricatures that they have been made to be.
The story is moving and disturbing but does not attempt to propagate an opinion. Those who watch this film due to a fascination of the boys who came to be known as the "WM3" may find themselves disappointed because, as in reality, this story is not solely focused on the accused but instead, reflects on the loss of the children as well.
This is the most objective and accurate portrayal of the real events of this complicated case. There are excellent portrayals by Academy Award Winners Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth, but the most chilling performance is that of Alessandro Nivola.
