You can't expect much from a premise as ridiculous as this one. But with surprisingly good practical effects, decent CGI and an entertaining last half hour, you can kind of forgive how disappointingly average the acting performances are and how serious this movie takes itself.
If you like b-grade science fiction and horror movies, you will probably find something to enjoy in this one.
