Review of Devil in a Blue Dress (1995) by Zenobia O — 19 Jun 2009
The costumes and set design in this movie really really excite me! So excellent. Well acted, well written, well directed story centered in 1940s black Los Angeles. A modern film noir with black people, which I find to be a rare treat! I wish these types of movies happened more often.
Another thing that impresses me about the acting in this film is that 'most' of these people actually talk like they are in the 40s. I hate it when actors don't think its necessary to commit to the speaking style of the period they are portraying.
As far as as presenting a convincing (modern) period piece this movie is tops. Its only pitfalls are the lackluster ending and the sometimes unnecessary violence. Otherwise, this movie exceeded my expectations which is rare.
