Review of Devil (2010) by Jason B — 30 Sep 2011

Let's get this out of the way. This may be a story from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan but he did not direct it. Now that you know that, maybe you'll give it a chance. The film relies on claustrophobia & paranoia to create its tension.

Problem is it doesn't really work. The cast just doesn't give strong enough performances nor is the script tight enough to bring the audience into the moment. Still the film isn't horrible.

Think of it as an extended Twilight Zone episode, predictable and yet there is still something enticing about it. The religious overtones are a bit heavy handed and at times borders on the ridiculous but with most of the other characters being little more than cookie cutter cut outs it isn't to bad.

Over all there is still a good story inside a plain wrapper. It would've been much more at home on television rather than a theatrical release but upon a casual watch at home it is worth a look.
