Review of Devil (2010) by Bryan K — 20 Oct 2012
Every single element of this film feels like a cheat, and the ending is exactly what one would expect of a Shyamalan film...attempting to be significant and unexpected with a twist that anyone that passed middle school English saw coming 20 minutes in.
The entire cast of characters has absolutely nothing endearing or consistent about them (they all have criminal records, they are all suspicious), and there is really no concern about their impending deaths.
The involvement of the police in this film is awfully convenient and largely implausible. The security guard characters are used almost entirely as narrators....as if anyone with an IQ would need Cliffs Otes to get through this crap.
The confined space of the elevator offers no tension, as it becomes clear from the first scene that the monter will only strike if the lights go out, and vice versa. There is also way too much time spent outside the elevator to ever feel claustrophobic.
With no unpredictability built in, a cliched villain and a cast of characters that belong in hell, there is no reason to watch this. Take the stairs.
