Review of Devil (2010) by Aries M — 02 Nov 2012
Most people giving this terrible ratings are doing it based on M. Night's well-deserved reputation for duds. But if you actually sit through this film, you'd find that it was unexpectedly entertaining, chilling, humurous (darkly), and featured some solid performances.
The story of the Devil, which is narrated throughout the film, ranges from something sounding ridiculous that you'd just shrug off... To a neatly woven tale that makes sense, as illustrated by the events of the film.
I was especially impressed by the performance of Bokeem Woodbine, who I didn't think could act his way out of a paper bag. It's nothing Oscar-worthy, but he, like the rest of the cast, is solid.
Honestly, it's the first M. Night film in a long time that gripped me and held me right up to the trademark twist at the film's climax. To be even more honest, Devil is the first M. Night film in quite a while that I haven't wanted to ask for a refund after viewing.
Great movie, and here's to hoping M. Night can carry this momentum and STAY ON TRACK.
